Cody, New Addition to our Family

The newest member of our security team joined our ranks yesterday just in time for the holidays. According to his terms of reference part of his duties will include assisting his big brother Jack in keeping the house safe from intruders. He does not appear to be afraid or intimated by anything.

In addition to those duties he will also provide friendship and companionship to all those under our roof. He appears to be a happy well adjusted dog. His appetite is quite ravenous.

The Pekingese breed originated from the ancient Chinese city of Peking (now Beijing). Hopefully the weather here in tropical southeast Asia will not be too much for this little guy's fantastic white fur cut.

We were already taking care of 2 cats and a dog so I was not initially too thrilled about adding another dog into the mix.

Despite my initial objection, those adorable eyes and his playfulness quickly grew on me and we have welcomed the new addition into our home.

He reminds me of  a tiny polar bear. He seemed very relaxed as I was taking these photos.

My wife brought the last couple of pets we they were way too young (i.e.eyes still closed...) You can tell that the animals separated from their mothers at too early of an age results in excitement/anxiety issues as an adult.

I have noticed that behavior in 1/2 of the four pets that live with us. I can see the benefit of allowing the puppy to grow and interact with the other puppies in the litter.

Out of Bounds Photo Manipulations

Out of bounds (OOB) is a photo that has been manipulated so that they appear to be outside the boundaries of the original picture.

Sometimes, if its done effectively the image will seem to pop out of the photo and have three dimensional qualities. Its almost as if the photos are coming alive.

Some photos work better than others.

The concepts is not that difficult to understand and the entire process can become quite addictive.

A subject in the photograph is masked or isolated using the tools in a graphics editor.

New layers are added including a faux picture frame and some shadows to give it that three dimensional look.

There are certain elements which lend to more realistic perspectives in out of bounds images.

In my opinion, the most difficult part of creating effective out of bounds images is getting the shadows to look realistic.

Each image takes anywhere from 20 minutes to a few hours to complete.

There are several "Out of Bound" communities online with amazing artwork.

These types of photo manipulations are quite common in the advertising world and instance of out of bounds images are easy to spot in the mass of marketing media.

Out of bound images are a lot of fun to create. If done correctly it can turn an ordinary and make it seem as if it is almost coming alive.

With some imagination, creativity and basic photo editing knowledge you can create an amazing OOB image that captivates the viewer’s attention.

Any photo editing software such as Photoshop or Gimp can be used.

I've included some links to some Out of Bounds tutorials at the end of this post.

As you create more and more of these types of manipulations you will begin to understand the intricacies of lighting and layering on your subject matter.

This technique can easily be dovetailed with others resulting in some unique pieces.

Tessellations

Tessellations © 2012 Michael LaPalme

Tessellation is the process of creating a two-dimensional plane using the repetition of a geometric shape with no overlaps and no gaps.

Simply, Tessellations are shapes that tile perfectly forever.

Objects like triangles, squares, rectangles and pentagons can be found tessellating naturally in many living and non-living items.

The overall concepts is quite simple but the process involved in designing & executing a complex
pattern can be very complex.

Tessellating Elephant Pattern
Maurits Cornelis (M.C.) Escher the father of modern day tessellations created his entire collection by hand. Fortunately, I was able to use the assistance of a computer. Even with this assistance, each piece took me several hours to complete.

I have always thought it would be interesting to push the boundary to see where tessellation and photography meet.

The collection of images are a tribute to the master artist.

พริตตี้ Women of the Bangkok Motor Expo

Motorshow Pretty มอเตอร์โชว์ พริตตี้
These types of automobile trade shows are well known for having scores of beautiful women working as presenters, dancers, models, saleswomen and show girls promoting the auto industry. The 2012 Thailand International Motor Expo held at the IMPACT arena in Bangkok seemed to trump previous events in size & scale. I spent a couple of hours at the event and am sharing some of the images here.

The Bangkok International Motor Expo 2012 at the IMPACT arena, in Pak Kret came to a close last weekend after a two week run.  The event is filled with beautiful models hired by the automobile & related companies jockeying for position on the arena floor.

There are usually a couple of these types every year alternating between the IMPACT Arena in Pak Kret and the BITEC Convention Centre in Bangna.

The size of this event is amazing with display booths taking up several of the large auditoriums at the arena. The entire show last around 10 days or so. Tickets could be purchased at the door for ฿100 or approximately $3.25 at the current exchange rate.
